Pathway Planning Process
Pension funds are not just “assets.” Invested responsibly, they represent retirement security for millions of workers. In addition, these funds have disproportionate power to mitigate climate risk and drive more sustainable business practices by asset managers and in portfolio companies.
We work in select states to ensure that the policies and practices of pension funds (and other public funds) fully address climate risk and support retirement security. Our work in these states involve the key stakeholders in the funds (primarily workers represented by public sector unions) as well as the investment staff and elected officials who oversee the funds.
Our engagement starts with an understanding of the key stakeholders and decision makers, an analysis of the decision making structure, and a financial and policy analysis of the funds. We then work with the inviting stakeholders to convene partners, assess opportunities for robust change, address the need for education and training of constituencies and/or the general public, and co-create a road map for robust pro-climate policies in the fund.
Our approach to community-based organizing is inclusive and enables meaningful discourse and strategic organizing around common goals. We produce a pathway to change that is community-owned and driven.
